Fashion and Gardens, Garden Museum
Lambeth, London
Introduction
The Fashion & Gardens exhibition was curated by historian and writer Nicola Schulman and jointly organised by the Garden Museum and British Vogue.
The exhibition featured works by designers Valentino, Alexander McQueen, Philip Treacy, Christopher Bailey and others, in addition to some remarkable loans from the British Museum, the National Gallery, and the V&A.
The Narrative
The narrative follows a predominantly English story, embracing natural rather than stylistic flowers as emphasised by three thousand spring blooms hanging from the ceiling in the main hall, an installation by Rebecca Louise Law. This sets the scene for exploring the relationship between gardens and clothing in the wider context, a theme that has been flourishing for centuries.
The Objects
Around 100 exhibits of various types are displayed, showcasing the changing nature of both gardens and fashion.
From the English development of the simply cut, quirky garden clothing to the elaborate Lady’s Slipper Orchid hat by Philip Treacy, there is always something of interest to guide the visitor through the displays.
The Design
London Atelier worked closely with the museum team and curator to design and deliver this highly acclaimed and successful exhibition. Acting as both exhibition designer and narrator, the space was organised thematically, setting the scene for various stories to be told.
A bespoke showcase system was designed within a constrained budget, which satisfied the stringent requirements of the brief while allowing for maximum flexibility visually and technically. Through previous collaboration with world-class showcase manufacturers on new product developments, London Atelier had the inspiration and technical capability to provide a unique solution for the temporary exhibition. This was also tailored to the limited manufacturing capabilities of being produced locally. The showcase system was seamlessly integrated within the set work and incorporated carefully considered lighting design.
